Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy

A remote island off Antarctica, a research station with an underground seed bank, for when civilization as we know it ends (by flooding, burning or starvation) is now abandoned — except for the Salt family: a precocious  9-year old who has lived in isolation almost his entire life, his teenage sister who sleeps on the beach with the seals, and an older brother, filled with rage, who records the sounds of whales and plays his violin.

They are protected by their taciturn, reticent father who lives with the ghost of his wife. Their existence is pierced when a ship-wrecked woman, head shaved, washes ashore, not totally by accident. What is her mission? What are her secrets? Theirs? What are they protecting besides the seeds? By turns philosophical — choices: who decides who lives and dies, in nature, among humans.

Sorrowful and passionate. A ’thriller’  but far more profound. A truly remarkable tour de force.
