The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck
I was waiting for this book and it was so worth it. It is absolutely breathtaking!
The History of Sound has a pure, crystalline quality. In twelve timeless stories Shattuck explores American history, war, brotherhood and love. It reminds me a little of Stand By Me, by Wendell Berry (a Bookoccino best-seller some years back).
Like many readers, I’m enjoy a slim volume. Short stories another great option for the time-poor reader. They offer a glimpse, a captured moment, something beautifully unfinished and lingering. That they don’t seek to make sense of the world is refreshing too.
I love that Shattuck owns and operates America’s oldest general store (which is also a bookshop and pub). It’s called Davoll’s. It’s in Massachusetts. If you see him say hello.
