Geraldine Brooks in conversation with Graham Thorburn
It is our great pleasure to welcome Geraldine Brooks back to Bookoccino, the first stop on an Australian tour to celebrate her magnificent new novel, Horse.
Sublimely told and rich with historic detail and moral complexity, Horse glides effortlessly from the 19th Century to the present, to reckon with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America. At the heart of the story is a thoroughbred, a stallion, named Lexington, and an enslaved groomsman, Jarrett. Under Jarrett’s training Lexington won more races than any horse in American history and sired even more champions. Brooks took up riding when she was 50, and her love of horses infuses the novel, as do the experiences of her own sons. Whether or not you’ve ever sat in a saddle, you too will come to feel the bond between Lexington & Jarrett.
Geraldine will be in conversation with her dear friend, film director Graham Thorburn.
