August Book of the Month – Table for Two by Amor Towles

The latest book from staff favourite Amor Towles is a sophisticated collection of six great short stories and a novella. Short stories are sometimes a hard sell, but we plead with you to stay the course. They are brilliant vignettes examining the frailties, strengths and absurdities of the human condition coping with ethical and practical problems, executed with lightness of touch, humour and sophistication. Some of them, like that of the professional queue waiter, are touching, absurd and Chekhovian in style

The novella is a sequel to an earlier book, Rules of Civility, but can be read as a stand alone story, with a cast of characters and a plot that will delight. Set in 1930’s Hollywood, the stories are a reflection of the Hollywood of today as revealed by the #meto movement, where money and power take precedence over human dignity.

Amor Towles writes “most of the pieces… involve a pair of family members or strangers facing each other across a kitchen table to confront some new reality in their life”.
