[SOLD OUT] China Night 2024

24 Nov 2023 Recent Events

China is Australia’s biggest trade partner AND biggest security anxiety.

Prime Minister Albanese’s visit to China was the first by an Australian prime minister in seven years. President Biden and Xi Jinping met in San Francisco in an attempt to improve relations, and reduce the risk of war. Chinese and Australia war ships do more than pass in the night in the South China Sea.

What does it all mean? What is the risk of war? Will AUKUS submarines ever arrive?

Listen to a vibrant discussion at Bookoccino’s fourth ‘China Night,’ moderated again by Jane Perlez, Pulitzer-prize winning New York Times correspondent and Beijing Bureau Chief from 2012-2019.

The panelists will be:

Wanning Sun, author, Love Troubles: Inequality in China and Its Intimate Consequences. Deputy Director, Australia-China Relations Institute at UTS

Linda Jaivin, author, The Shortest History of China

James Curran, author, Australia’s China Odyssey: From Euphoria to Fear. International Affairs Editor, Australian Financial Review

Sam Roggeveen, author, The Echidna Strategy: Australia’s Search for Power and Peace. Director, Lowy Institute International Security Program
